Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an adaptogenic plant native to India and best known from Ayurveda, where it is classified as a Medhya-Rasayana. In this tradition, ashwagandha is used to promote calm and aid restful sleep. The name Ashwagandha comes from Sanskrit and means ‘smell of the horse’, as the roots have a characteristic scent reminiscent of horses. In German, Ashwagandha is also known as ‘Schlafbeere’ (sleep berry) or ‘Winterkirsche’ (winter cherry). From a botanical perspective, however, the botanical name is more interesting: whilst ‘Withania’ describes the plant genus, the species name ‘somnifera’ is derived from Latin and means ‘sleep-inducing’ (somnus = sleep, ferre = to bring). It is primarily the roots of this plant that are used, as the extract from the dried and powdered root is particularly rich in bioactive compounds, especially so-called withanolides.
These withanolides belong to the group of steroid lactones, which are known for their adaptogenic and redox-balancing properties. A total of 40 different withanolides have been identified in the root of ashwagandha. Ashwagandha 500 mg GPH capsules contain 500 mg of Ashwagandha root extract from hand-harvested roots in India. The plants are harvested in accordance with GACP guidelines (Good Agricultural and Collection Practices).
