Father Severin’s woad root ointment is a traditional natural remedy, produced according to an ancient monastic recipe for skin care.
Dyer’s woad (Isatis tinctoria) has a long history. The colouring compounds in this plant produce the deep blue dye indigo, which has been used to dye clothing for at least two millennia. Towards the end of the 19th century, the dyeing of textiles was gradually replaced by simpler methods and industrial dyes, leading to the gradual disappearance of the large-scale cultivation areas of woad in England, Thuringia, Alsace and southern France. However, woad was not only known for its colouring properties. In natural cosmetics, this plant is mainly used in ointments to treat skin irritations and to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi. The plant’s specific constituents, including indican, glucosinolates (particularly mustard oil glycosides), tannins and pigments, not only combat unwanted microorganisms and fungi but also inhibit the proliferation of uncontrolled growth of the body’s own cells. Dyer’s woad aids the healing of skin cracks and other skin damage thanks to its astringent properties; it reduces blood flow and improves the condition of flaky and dry skin. Applying dyer’s woad ointment therefore contributes to faster skin regeneration and care.
