The woad root ointment from Father Severin is a traditional natural remedy made according to an old monastery recipe for skin care.
Woad (Isatis tinctoria) has a long tradition. The colouring ingredients of this plant produce the deep blue dye indigo, which has been used to dye clothing for at least two millennia. Towards the end of the 19th century, the dyeing of textiles was gradually replaced by simpler methods and industrial dyes, as a result of which the large-scale cultivation areas of woad in England, Thuringia, Alsace and southern France increasingly disappeared. However, woad was not only known for its colouring properties. In natural cosmetics, this plant is mainly used in ointments to treat skin irritations and to inhibit the growth of harmful germs and fungi. The special ingredients of this plant, including indican, glucosinolates (especially mustard oil glycosides), tannins and colouring agents, are not only effective against unwanted microorganisms and fungi, but also inhibit the proliferation of the body's own cells that are growing uncontrollably. Woad supports the healing of skin cracks and other skin damage through its astringent properties, reduces blood flow and improves the condition of flaky and dry skin. The use of woad ointment thus contributes to faster regeneration and care of the skin
