Dyer’s woad (Isatis tinctoria) has a long history. The colouring compounds in this plant produce the deep blue dye indigo, which has been used to dye clothing for more than two millennia. However, dyer’s woad is also well known in natural cosmetics. It soothes irritated skin and inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi. The specific constituents of this plant, including indican, glucosinolates (particularly mustard oil glycosides), tannins and dyes, are not only effective against unwanted microorganisms and fungi, but also slow down the proliferation of the body’s own uncontrolled cell growth. Dyer’s woad supports the healing of skin cracks and other skin damage thanks to its astringent properties, reduces blood flow and improves the condition of flaky and dry skin.
