The plant Hamamelis virginiana L. also known as witch hazel, belongs to the witch hazel family (Hamamelidaceae). The name witch hazel comes from the fact that, depending on the weather, this plant already bears flowers in the middle of a bare and cold winter. Witch hazel was discovered as a medicinal plant by the aborigines and was described as having haemostatic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also said to be beneficial for diarrhoea due to its ingredients such as tannins (hamamelitannin), flavonoids and essential oils.
