In addition to tannins and phenolic glycosides, willow bark contains salicin and acylated salicin derivatives, which are converted into salicylic acid in the liver. Among other things, this well-known chemical compound helps to maintain a normal core body temperature. However, the effect of willow bark is more pronounced than would be expected from its salicin content alone, as the other constituents may enhance the beneficial properties of salicylic acid.
