Red clover was already used in folk medicine by Hildegard von Bingen in the early Middle Ages. Important ingredients of red clover include flavonoids, isoflavones and tannins. Flavonoids have antispasmodic and expectorant properties and are used to treat respiratory diseases and whooping cough. Isoflavones have an oestrogenic and anti-oestrogenic effect and can be used in menopause.
