Psyllium seeds are often the seeds of the species Plantago ovata (Indian plantain) offered as psyllium husks. The seeds are reddish-brown in colour and resemble fleas, which gave the plant the name "flea herb". Dioscorides already mentioned the benefits of psyllium in ancient times. Indian psyllium has long been used to treat all types of mucosal inflammation and irritation. There are also reports that psyllium is recommended for gallbladder problems and sore throats.
