The true marshmallow (Althaea officinalis L.) belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae). The health-promoting effects of marshmallow have been known since ancient times. The marshmallow leaves and roots contain mucilage. Due to the mucilage it contains, marshmallow is used to treat coughs. Marshmallow is also used for inflammation of the mouth and throat and in the gastrointestinal tract.
