The cola tree produces the popular cola seeds. More precisely, the dried kola seeds are used after the seed coat has been removed. Cola seeds are said to be stimulating as they are rich in purine alkaloids (caffeine, theobromine) and catechin substances (cola tannin). Cola extracts are therefore often used as a tonic to combat tiredness and drowsiness, as some reports claim that they increase the heart rate.
