The clove tree (Caryophyllus aromaticus L.) is a member of the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). Its ingredients include the essential oil (eugenol) with its appetising and antibacterial properties. It also contains tannins, flavonoids and sterols. This is why clove is used in dentistry as an antiseptic and for inflammation of the mouth and throat.
