The red cinchona tree (Cinchona pubescens Vahl.) belongs to the Rubiaceae family. The positive properties (antipyretic, tonic and appetite stimulant) were already known to the Incas. The active ingredients include the bitter alkaloids (quinine, quinidine, quinchonine and quinchonidine), catechin tannins and bitter substances. The aqueous/alcoholic extracts of cinchona bark are mainly used to treat flu-like infections, fever and, due to the many bitter substances, digestive complaints.
