Chia seeds are the seeds of the Mexican chia plant (Salvia hispanica L.), which belongs to the labiate family (Lamiaceae). The seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids, numerous minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. When soaked in water, the seeds form an extremely slimy polysaccharide layer, which aids digestion. Chia seeds have lipid-lowering, blood sugar-lowering, antioxidant and cardioprotective effects. They are therefore used to prevent cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
