Beaver castoreum, also known as castoreum, is a secretion derived from the beaver’s glandular sacs. Castoreum was formerly used as an antispasmodic and to treat nervousness. The main active ingredient is ‘castorin’, the primary component of which is cholesterol. Castoreum is also said to have a beneficial effect on colds, due to the salicylic acid it contains.
