Pater Severin Blueberry Fruit Spray is a dietary supplement for oral use, based on an old monastic recipe. It is made from a 100 per cent aqueous/alcoholic extract of blueberry fruit.
The blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) belongs to the heath family (Ericaceae). The fruits contain catechin tannins, flavonoids and anthocyanins (blue pigments). Dried blueberries are the main form used. Owing to their high tannin content, the effects of dried blueberry fruit on the digestive tract are highly valued. Their use to treat diarrhoea has a long tradition. In folk medicine, blueberry preparations are taken internally for haemorrhoids and used as a gargle.
