The bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), also known as blueberry, belongs to the heather family (Ericaceae). The fruits contain catechin tannins, flavonoids and anthocyanins (blue colouring). The dried blueberries are used in particular. Due to the high tannin content, the effects of dried bilberry fruits on the intestinal tract are appreciated. It has a long tradition of use for diarrhoea. In folk medicine, preparations of bilberry are used internally for haemorrhoids and as a gargle.
