The birch (Betula) belongs to the birch family (Betulaceae). The birch sap, which flows for a few weeks in spring, is obtained by tapping the trunk or cutting branches. The most important components of the bark are betulin, phytosterol, tannins, bitter substances and essential oil. Birch bark has positive effects on wound healing and is said to have anti-inflammatory and cell growth-inhibiting properties. It is also known to have a positive effect on neurodermatitis, psoriasis and actinic keratosis (skin damaged by sunlight).
