It was used in particular as an antidote for snake bites, but also for other health complaints, such as infectious diseases or heart conditions. In Venice, the preparation of Venetian Theriac, or ‘Theriac venezian’, was carried out with great pomp and ceremony in the presence of the highest authorities.
