The main ingredients of vanilla are essential oil, vanillin, vanillic acid, vanillyl alcohol, resins, mucilage, tannins and many other components. In the 18th century, vanilla found its way into many pharmacopoeias. For example, it was used as an aphrodisiac, for hysteria, menstrual disorders and, together with iron, for iron deficiency.
