Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) belongs to the valerian family (Valerianaceae). Valerian contains valepotriates and alkaloids in addition to the essential oil, which is responsible for the characteristic odour of the rhizome. Valerian is said to have a positive effect on the nervous system and to be a sedative and sleeping aid. It is also said to have tonic properties.
