The turmeric root belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The rhizome is often used in herbal medicine. The root has a bitter and pungent flavour. The essential oil and curcuminoids are said to help increase the flow of bile and have positive effects on flatulence, bloating and inflammatory bowel diseases. It also has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and liver-protective properties.
