Turmeric belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The rhizome is frequently used in herbal medicine. The root has a bitter and pungent taste. The essential oil and curcuminoids are said to help increase bile flow, as well as having beneficial effects on flatulence, bloating and inflammatory bowel diseases. It also has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and liver-protective properties.
