The roots and flowers of the primrose are mainly used. The plant contains saponins as its most important ingredient, but also flavones, essential oil, silicic acid and tannins. Due to its secretolytic and expectorant properties, primrose is used to treat coughs, bronchitis and colds. In folk medicine, it is recommended for headaches, neuralgia and dizziness
