Mahonia is a plant species belonging to the barberry family (Berberidaceae). The main constituents of common mahonia root include alkaloids (e.g. berberine, oxyacanthin, berbamine) and proteins. In folk medicine, it is said to have beneficial effects on fever, diarrhoea, dyspeptic symptoms, inflammatory conditions affecting the bile ducts and urinary tract, as well as skin conditions.
