The yam belongs to a plant family comprising around 800 species. It is a popular foodstuff with a flavour very similar to that of the sweet potato. The wild yam used here, Dioscorea villosa, is native to North America and is particularly rich in the compound diosgenin. In the modern pharmaceutical industry, diosgenin is used in the laboratory as a starting material for the production of semi-synthetic sex hormones such as progesterone, glucocorticoids and oral contraceptives. Diosgenin is also metabolised in the human body. Yam was already used by Native Americans as a ‘women’s plant’, as it has various beneficial effects for women of all ages.
