Dill (Anethum graveolens L.) belongs to the umbellifer family (Apiaceae). Dill was already valued as a medicinal and aromatic plant in ancient Egypt. Its ingredients are essential oil, bergaptene, scopoletin, aesculetin, umbelliferone and phenolcarboxylic acids. Dill is said to have spasmolytic and bacteriostatic properties. Its favourable effect on the gastrointestinal tract has been known since time immemorial. Dill has always been used successfully in folk medicine for its diuretic, appetite-stimulating and diuretic properties.
