Dill (Anethum graveolens L.) belongs to the umbellifer family (Apiaceae). Dill was already valued as a medicinal and aromatic plant in ancient Egypt. The ingredients of dill fruits are essential oil, bergaptene, scopoletin, aesculetin, umbelliferone and phenolcarboxylic acids. Dill is said to have spasmolytic and bacteriostatic properties. Its favourable effect on the gastrointestinal tract is particularly well known. Dill has long been used successfully in folk medicine for its diuretic, appetite-stimulating and diuretic properties.
