The condurango shrub (Marsdenia cundurango) belongs to the milkweed family (Asclepiadaceae). It is primarily the dried bark that is used, containing the following constituents: cundurango glycosides, steroid saponins, flavonoids and coumarin derivatives. Condurango bark is said to have beneficial effects on digestive pain and stomach problems. In folk medicine, the bark is also used as a bitter. It can increase the secretion of saliva and gastric juice and help with a lack of appetite.
