True cinnamon (Cinnamonum Zeylanicum), also known as Ceylon cinnamon, belongs to the laurel family (Lauraceae). The peeled bark of true cinnamon is mainly used. The most important ingredient in cinnamon is the essential oil (cinnamaldehyde, eugenol). Cinnamon is said to have a circulation-promoting, antispasmodic and calming effect. It also has a positive effect on lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
