True centaury (Centaurium erythraea) belongs to the gentian family (Gentianaceae). Centaury has been valued as a medicinal plant since ancient times. Like all members of the gentian family, centaury belongs to the ‘Amara’ group due to its high content of bitter compounds. The plant has appetite-stimulating properties and is used in folk medicine to treat feverish conditions, gout and nervous disorders.
