Caulophyllum root (Caulophyllum thalictroides (L.) Michaux) belongs to the barberry family (Berberidaceae). The plant contains quinolizidine alkaloids and triterpene saponins. The North American natives were already aware of the positive properties of blue buttercup and used it to treat women's ailments. It is said to have antispasmodic, diuretic and oestrogen-like properties. Even today, it is said to have positive effects on menstrual cramps, PMS and menopausal symptoms.
