Caulophyllum (Caulophyllum thalictroides (L.) Michaux) belongs to the barberry family (Berberidaceae). The plant’s active constituents include quinolizidine alkaloids and triterpene saponins. The indigenous peoples of North America were already aware of the beneficial properties of blue buttercup and used it to treat women’s ailments. It is said to have antispasmodic, diuretic and oestrogen-like properties. Even today, it is still said to have beneficial effects on menstrual cramps, PMS and the symptoms of the menopause.
