The Gerber acacia or catechu (Acacia catechu (L.f.) Willd) belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae). The dried, dark brown extract from the wood of the tree is used. The ingredients are catechins, catechin tannins, quercetin, quercitrin and mucilage. Preparations can be used both internally and externally. According to folk medicine, when used internally, catechu has astringent effects and a positive influence on the intestines. Catechu is often used externally as an ingredient in mouthwashes, gargles and tooth tinctures
