The blue buttercup (Caulophyllum thalictroides (L.) Michaux) belongs to the barberry family (Berberidaceae). The plant's most important constituents include quinolizidine alkaloids and triterpene saponins. The North American natives were already aware of the positive properties of blue buttercup and used it primarily for women's ailments. It is said to have antispasmodic, diuretic and oestrogen-like properties.
