Spearmint belongs to the large mint family. The flavours are diverse and the menthol content of the individual varieties varies. What they all have in common is the intense odour that is produced when the leaves are crushed. If the mint is soaked in alcohol, an extract with beneficial properties is produced. The menthol contained in the mint can be felt like a cooling breeze on the skin and in the mouth and throat. This cools, calms and relaxes the head and respiratory tract. Special care should be taken with young children. Brown mint is also used as an ingredient in pasta cookery.
