Boldo (Peumus boldus MOL.) belongs to the Monimiaceae family. The leaves contain alkaloids (boldin), essential oil, flavonoids and triterpenes. The plant has long been used in folk medicine to treat cramp-like gastrointestinal complaints and to stimulate the secretion of bile and gastric juice. The main alkaloid boldin is responsible for this use.
