Boldo (Peumus boldus MOL.) belongs to the Monimiaceae family. The leaves contain alkaloids (boldine), essential oil, flavonoids and triterpenes. In folk medicine, the plant has long been used to treat spasmodic gastrointestinal complaints and to promote the secretion of bile and gastric juice. The main alkaloid, boldine, is responsible for these effects.
