The small burnet (Pimpinella saxifraga) belongs to the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae). The root contains essential oil and various coumarin derivatives, in particular pimpillin. The drug smells and tastes spicy, with a pungent, acrid aftertaste. It is known that beavernell root is well suited as a mild cough remedy for inflammation of the mouth, throat and mucous membranes. In folk medicine, the drug is described as a diuretic.
