German bertram (Anacyclus officinarum), a composite plant (Asteraceae), is known as a medicinal plant due to its root. It was already used in folk medicine as a tincture for toothache and oral diseases, as a liniment for colds, cramps and paralyses. Hildegard von Bingen was also aware of the many positive properties of Bertram root. It is used for digestive complaints, regulates the intestinal flora and serves as a tonic.
