The white-flowering bear's root (Meum athamanticum), which belongs to the umbellifer family (Apiaceae), has a spicy, strong odour and is often used in cooking due to its aromatic essential oils. Bear's bane is also used in Hildegard von Bingen recipes. It is also known that the drug is used to treat digestive disorders and febrile illnesses and is said to have diuretic, cardiotonic, menstrual and diaphoretic properties.
