The barberry (Berberis vulgaris L.) belongs to the barberry family (Berberidaceae). The most important constituents of barberry root include alkaloids such as berberine and jatrorrhizine, tannins, resin and wax. The root bark is said to strengthen the gallbladder and other digestive organs, act as a diuretic and help relieve constipation. The root bark is also known to have beneficial effects on high blood pressure, slowing the heart rate and dilating blood vessels.
