The barberry (Berberis vulgaris L.) belongs to the barberry family (Berberidaceae). The most important ingredients of barberry root include alkaloids such as berberine and jatrorrhizin, tannins, resin and wax. The root bark is said to strengthen the gall bladder and other digestive organs, have a diuretic effect and counteract constipation. The root bark is also known to have a positive effect on high blood pressure, calming the pulse rate and dilating blood vessels.
