Bitter fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) belongs to the umbellifer family (Apiaceae). The ripe fruits are used; when crushed, they release the characteristic fennel scent. Fennel fruits contain essential oil (bitter fennel oil) with sweet-tasting trans-anethol and the bitter compound fenchone. Based on many years of experience, fennel incorporated into syrup can be used for mild cramp-like symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract, for bloating and flatulence, and as an expectorant for coughs.
