Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum L.) belongs to the umbellifer family (Apiaceae). The essential oil, which is obtained from ripe dried fruits, is used. The main component is trans-anethole. It also contains fatty oil, phenolic carboxylic acids and flavonoids. In folk medicine, aniseed is used to treat stomach and intestinal complaints, as well as flatulence and bloating. Thanks to its secretolytic and secretomotor properties, it has been used as a mild cough remedy for catarrh of the respiratory tract.
