Common horehound (Marrubium vulgare L.) belongs to the Lamiaceae family. The plant, whose leaves have a bitter taste, is native to southern Europe. Its active constituents include diterpene bitter compounds (marrubin), essential oil, Lamiaceae tannins, as well as flavone and flavone glycosides. Hildegard von Bingen describes the preparation of a horehound wine in her writings. Horehound has beneficial effects on the gastrointestinal tract and is used to treat loss of appetite. Its use as a gargle also has a long tradition.
