Yam root is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and in other cultures, and is regarded as the ‘queen of plants’ in hormonal regulation. Yam root is characterised by a high content of the plant hormone diosgenin. Diosgenin is very similar in structure to the hormones DHEA and progesterone. DHEA is regarded as the ‘hormone of youth’. The decline in DHEA levels in the body is closely linked to ageing; in 80-year-olds, levels are only around 10 per cent of the original peak value reached in youth.

The yam root has an adaptogenic effect and helps the body to adapt better to stress. It helps to normalise the metabolism, supports muscle development and is regarded in TCM as an anti-ageing food that boosts energy and performance. Yam serves as a complementary alternative when hormone levels fall. For general well-being and as a preventative measure, daily intake over a longer period is recommended.
