DerMel® wound ointment can be used to treat, protect and heal irritated, dry and/or sensitive skin (e.g. eczema). DerMel® is also suitable for the treatment of superficial and inflamed wounds.
DerMel® wound ointment made from medicinal honey is a soothing ointment for the protection and healing of irritated, dry and/or sensitive skin, such as eczema. TheMel® Wound Ointment can also be used to treat superficial and inflamed wounds caused, for example, by scratching eczema. DerMel® Wound Ointment consists of a skin moisturising ointment in combination with pure, enzyme-rich honey. The specific composition (including a low pH value) strengthens the skin's natural defences. When applied to the skin, DerMel® wound ointment has a slightly cooling effect and therefore reduces itching.
DerMel® is antibacterial but antibiotic-free, anti-inflammatory but cortisone-free, wound-healing but chemical-free and contains no preservatives.
DerMel® is suitable for babies, children and adults.
Broad spectrum of efficacy of medicinal honey in wound management:
ANTIBACTERIAL EFFICACY:
- Honey contains the enzyme glucose oxidase. This is activated by diluting the honey with the wound secretion. This produces small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, which is responsible for the germicidal effect. The long enzyme action effectively kills harmful bacteria and disinfects the wound.
- The high sugar concentration in the honey removes moisture from the germs, flushing harmful substances from the wound, cleansing the wound and restricting the activity and reproduction of bacteria.
- By changing the bacterial metabolism and reducing the bacteria, honey has an odour-reducing effect.
-> Medicinal honey is effective against aerobic, anaerobic, gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, problem germs, fungi and viruses.
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECT:
- The anti-inflammatory effect of honey results from the elimination of bacteria and can be explained in part by the presence of flavonoids, which come from nectar and pollen. Flavonoids have a strong antioxidant effect, i.e. they scavenge harmful oxygen radicals. A relatively large number of inflammatory cells are present in chronic wounds. These cells produce oxygen radicals, among other things, which keeps the wound restless and painful. Chronic wounds come to rest after the application of honey and can then enter the proliferation phase. Studies show that honey also stimulates the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines in the wound.
-> Honey application can significantly reduce signs of inflammation such as pain, swelling, redness and oedema.
PROMOTES WOUND HEALING:
- The hydrophilic properties, low pH value, high sugar concentration and low water content of honey create a moist wound environment. The flow of fluid cleanses the wound and protects against new infections. Honey applied to wounds promotes tissue regeneration during the various phases of wound healing, which has a positive effect on wound healing, allowing wounds to close and heal.
-> Medicinal honey supports the wound healing process.
As a CE-certified medical product, DerMel® is produced under controlled conditions in greenhouses in Holland without the use of pesticides or chemicals.
