Bios Pycnogenol® 50 mg capsules are a food supplement containing pine bark extract.
Pycnogenol® is a natural plant extract derived from the bark of the French maritime pine (Pinus pinaster). This patented product has a high proanthocyanidin content (65–75 per cent) and is rich in various antioxidant organic acids and bioflavonoids. As a powerful antioxidant, Pycnogenol® binds free radicals, thereby enhancing the antioxidant potential of every single cell. Free radicals are highly reactive compounds which, due to their high reactivity, indiscriminately attack substances in the human body. Although the human body has developed a defence system to combat these free radicals, this can be enhanced by the additional intake of plant-based compounds with antioxidant potential.
Maritime pine bark extract has a far higher antioxidant protective potential than, for example, vitamins E and C. One consequence of this is a reduction in the release of histamine and cytokinins. Thanks to its high content of oligomeric proanthocyanidins, or OPCs for short, Pycnogenol® supports microcirculation in the capillaries, with beneficial effects on the vessel walls. The OPCs exhibit extremely high bioavailability. This means that the rate of absorption by the human body is very efficient.
