Bios Lipoic Acid 150 mg capsules are a dietary supplement containing alpha-lipoic acid. Alpha lipoic acid, also known as thioctic acid, is a vitamin-like endogenous substance that is mainly found in tissues with intensive energy metabolism.

Alpha lipoic acid is a sulphur-containing fatty acid produced naturally in the body. In its natural form, it plays an important role as a coenzyme in the mitochondria and is therefore significantly involved in the energy metabolism of cells. As a powerful antioxidant, alpha lipoic acid can protect tissue from damage caused by free radicals and even recycle antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q-10 or glutathione after they have been used up. The fatty acid can also chelate metals such as mercury, lead, aluminium or cadmium and is therefore also used to remove heavy metals from the body.

As alpha lipoic acid is both water- and fat-soluble, it can cross the blood-brain barrier and is therefore also able to rid the brain of harmful metals. As a rule, the human body produces sufficient quantities of alpha lipoic acid for its daily needs. However, it is now assumed that alpha lipoic acid is insufficiently produced under certain physiological conditions. Furthermore, additional intake of alpha lipoic acid as a dietary supplement provides the body with additional resources that can be utilised for antioxidant processes.
